Some may remember the early days of The Mountain Goats, when John Darnielle, sole goat at the time, would record albums by pressing record on a tape recorder sitting in a room. Nothing is perfect - rough edges are left rough, like the slightly off harmonizing “whoas” on “From Behind the Garage” - but if they were perfect the music would lose its character. As a result, the EP has a live, single-take feel to it that imbues a naked honesty. Sorrel writes electric folk songs that have the DIY qualities of punk rock. The song is called “From Behind the Garage,” so there is some thematic intention to the choice of sound, but it’s also emblematic of the band’s attitude. The first 14 seconds of the first track on Denver trio Sorrel‘s first EP, “Little,” released late 2015, is the rattle, squeak and hum of a garage door rolling in its tracks.
